Catholic Church in Corfu Catholic Church in Corfu

Catholic Weddings in Corfu take place at the Duomo, the Church of St. James’ and St. Jacob’s, which has been the local Catholic Cathedral since 1632.  It is a most elegant building with the characteristic baroque curves of the 17th century evident in its pediment, its crenulated tower of gothic style, and tall campanile, located in the heart of the historic Old Town of Corfu, on the Town Hall square – I attach photo for your information.

Procedure

Your first step is to arrange a meeting with the Catholic priest of your local parish and inform him of your intention to marry and your intention to have your wedding abroad.

What you should expect (In short): The priest will ask for your Birth Certificates and Baptism Certificates and upon reviewing them he will instruct you on any further documentation that might be required. You will then have to follow and complete a “marriage preparation class” at your local parish. As soon as these lessons are over and your documents are in order, your parish priest will give his permission for your wedding. Your documents will then be submitted with our help and your local parish’s kind cooperation to the local Catholic bishop for his licence and to finalise all relevant details with the local Catholic Church for your wedding to take place.

Canonical Documents Required for Catholic Weddings in Corfu

These documents will have to be sourced by you and send to us (via your parish in some cases) to be submitted to the local Bishop)

  • Baptismal Certificate for both intended parties
Note : it requires the signature of the priest who has performed your baptism and the signature of a superior or higher authority such as the cardinal, bishop or authority in your local Arch Diocese.
  • Confirmation Certificate for both intended parties
Note : the same applies as per the above.
  • Non impediment to Marry Certificate for both intended parties Note : the above serves to confirm that you are free from any canonical impediment to marry.

You will take the above documents to your local parish priest, who will deal with your prenuptial inquiry and arrange your catechetical instruction (marriage preparation class, known as PRE-CANA).

He will then, according to Canon 1115 of the Codex Juris Canonici give you their written permission (from your local bishop/cardinal/arch diocese) for your marriage to be performed by the local Catholic Church in Corfu.

At this stage, he will ask you of the following information on the local Catholic Church who will be actually be performing your wedding – the address is as follows:

Duomo – Cathedral of St James and St Jacobs
Town Hall Square
Corfu Town
49 100 Corfu
Greece

Responsible Priest: Father Marios Rigos.

Your local priest will then contact directly or through us (depending on his preference) the local Catholic Church and send over your documents, along with the Certificate that you have successfully completed the Pre Cana class with them.

Along with the above church certificates, you will also need to have issued: Step 1: Civil Documents required (as per Greek/European Law):

  • he Civil Certificate of non Impediment to Marry from your local Town Hall/Registrar’s Office, for each of you. This is required by Greek Law and has to be issued 3 months prior to your wedding date, as its validity period is only for 3 months.
  • Your Birth Certificate will also be required (which you should have already, or can have it issued from your local Registrar’s).

Step 2 : The above 2 certificates you will need to have legalised with the Apostille Seal (Hague Seal, according to the European Convention).
You can obtain this seal at the:

The Legalization Office
Foreign & Commonwealth Office
Old Admiralty Building
The Mall
London SW1A 2LG

Step 3 : Once the above 2 documents have been legalised, you will need to have them translated into Greek by a local translator.
Note: the translator needs to be approved by the local Greek Embassy/Consulate of your country.
Please contact them for a list of their approved local translators.

Step 4 : The translated documents will then have to be certified by the local Greek Consulate / Embassy.

Note : the documents obtained by your parish do not have to be translated or certified. This applies only to the Civil documents.

Step 5 : As soon as the above 2 documents are prepared you will need to send them over to us, along with a copy of your passports, in order to submit them for and on your behalf to the local authorities.

Your wedding at the local Catholic Church will be conducted in your native language (Eng / Fre / Italian / Greek). If your native language is other to these, you should inform us so that we arrange for a local translator.

You will need to be present in Corfu at least 2 full working days prior to your wedding date, to meet with the local priest and have a short rehearsal, as well as stay 1 working day after your wedding in order to accompany me to the local Registrar’s to have your wedding declared in order to obtain you with the relevant Wedding Certificate (valid throughout the world).

I will be at your disposal to guide and assist you along the whole way, and of course, I will be at your disposal in Corfu during your stay and with you on the day of your wedding and during your local appointments with the priest and at the Registrar’s to assist you.
